Our Mission Statement

The Independence Historical Trust promotes the historical, scientific, educational and interpretive activities of Independence National Historical Park for which no government or other donated funds are available.


Who Are We

  • An organization that has the honor and privilege to support the most Historic Square Mile in the nation
  • The first Friends Group in the history of the National Park Service
  • Incorporated in 1972
  • A Non-profit 501(c)3 organization
  • A volunteer organization made up of caring citizens
  • A Unique Partnership for Preservation, Education, and Inspiration
  • Over 40 years as the fundraising arm of Independence National Historical Park
  • A rare and dynamic collaboration between public and private sector

How Do We Support the Park

  • By fundraising for major projects; such as People’s Plaza and the Independence Hall Decorative Scrim where funding through the federal government was not available
  • By organizing educational lectures for members and non-members
  • By offering free educational tours led by our volunteer organization The Twilight Tour Guides
  • By providing volunteer support for NPS events
  • By funding large and small projects; no project is too big

What We Have Done

  • Purchased over 1,000 artifacts for INHP’s collections
  • Funded Welcome Park; a 1.2 million dollar project
  • Funded a Permanent Archaeological exhibit at 318 Market Street
  • Created and implemented “Miracle of Philadelphia,” a $900,000 project
  • Funded People’s Plaza, a $269,000 area located on Independence Mall , dedicated to the Freedom of Speech
  • Completed the “VIP” room in Independence Hall’s west wing
