Welcome to the 4th Annual Freedom 5K Run which benefits Independence National Historical Park.

We do not run… we change history! Actually not really, but we do have a lot of fun!
Just like the people who gathered in this space in 1776, you will have to make a choice.  Do you run as a Loyalist in support of King and country or will stand up for your rights and run as a Patriot for Independence.  The choice is yours and yours alone to make!

The Day of the Run
Events after the run

Race Location
5th and Walnut Streets Philadelphia, PA 19106.  Day of Race activities happen behind the Second Bank of the United States building which is along Walnut Street between 4th and 5th Streets.  The race starts in Washington Square which is located at 6th and Walnut Streets

Course
The course has changed and we are happy to announce that there are no stairs on this course!  However because we are running in Old City, there will be some cobblestone streets. We have marked them on the map but please be careful when running.

Description of Course (Click Here for Map)
Starting in Washington Square, runners will run around the square and exit on to the street at 7th street. Runners will run up 7th and turn on to Chestnut Street.  From there runners run east pass Independence Hall and turn into Franklin Court to run by the site of Benjamin Franklin’s home,  From there, runners will turn on Market Street and run east and take the Penn’s Landing ramp down to Columbus Blvd.    Runners will run down Columbus to Spruce Street where they turn and run towards the river.  From there, runners run along the river and take the Chestnut Street ramp back up to Front Street.  Runners will run Front Street to Market to 2nd Street where they will turn and head towards Walnut Street.  At Walnut Street, runners turn at historic City Tavern and pass the Merchant Exchange Building. Here runners take quick detour through the beautiful paths of Independence National Historical Park before the sprint to the finish line on Walnut Street between 4th and 5th streets.

Volunteers Needed

Volunteers are needed to help with the Philly Freedom 5K run. If you have ever run in a race before, you know that volunteers along the course make all the difference when you are in need of a moral boost. Come help our runners by cheering them on and being the boost they need!

There are lot so of opportunities for volunteers on the day of the race from being on the course, helping to give out water and even helping before the race at our packet pickup days. If you are willing to help us make this race a success, please register to be a volunteer. Someone will contact you with more information.

How the race helps the park

Proceeds from this year’s run will go to the Law Enforcement Bicycle Patrol Fund which is a fund setup by Friends of Independence to purchase new bicycles and maintain the current fleet for the Law Enforcement Bicycle Patrol here at the park.

At Independence, we have many Law Enforcement Rangers who use bicycles to protect our citizens and visitors every day. Bicycles help them quickly travel around our 54 acre park. The average law enforcement bike last 2-3 years before it needs to be replaced.

In 2014, we were able to provide, through a sponsorship, 10 new law enforcement bicycles that were needed to replace the aging fleet. The goal for the Freedom 5 K Run is to provide more bikes to our rangers as well as much needed equipment to help protect our park, as well as the 4 million visitors who come to this park every year.
